Chapter Ten

Violet texted Dawson once and called him twice. She didn’t get replies to any of her attempts to contact him, but maybe he had important Drei business to conduct. He’d asked her about her Saturday plans, but she’d never asked him about his. He was allowed to have stuff to do. They each had responsibilities. He could have explained better in the note he’d left, but she could forgive that because he’d told her he loved her last night.

And I love him.

What they’d done at his house sure had felt like love. Their activities had gone way beyond simple sex. A person didn’t get transported to the level Violet had reached last night just by having sex. She and Dawson had experienced a true soul-to-soul pairing and she wouldn’t let his mysterious disappearance this morning ruin that. The man had a right to go about his day without informing her of every little detail.

But still... It would have been nice to have kissed him goodbye before he’d left. To let him know she’d had yet another wonderful time with him. To say I love you again. To hear him say it back.

“You’ll see him later,” Violet said aloud as she restocked products on the display by the register at Tresses.

“Later,” Luna squawked from her perch.

Neydi raised her head from her spot under the sinks where she liked to hang out, hoping to get sprayed with the rinsing hose now and then. Deciding her owner apparently needed some love, the Husky rose to all fours and stretched out her limbs before padding over to Violet.

“Hey, girl.” Violet scratched the dog’s back then gave Neydi a hug. The embrace caused the dog to lick her cheek before squirming out of Violet’s hold. “Did you have fun with Uncle Jorden last night?”

When Violet had arrived at her house this morning, Jorden was getting ready to go to the gym before heading to Albero’s. Neydi had been on his heels, whining as he put on his sneakers.

“She missed you,” Jorden had told her.

“I was only gone a night and she usually sleeps with you anyway.”

“I know,” Jorden had said, “but she knows when you’re not around.”

“I think she had fun with Benny too. She likes being around other dogs.”

“As much as you like being around Dawson?” Jorden teased as he stood and grabbed his keys.

“Shut up.” Violet had glared at him, but couldn’t hold onto that expression. The mere mention of Dawson had her feeling all squishy inside. “God, I can’t stop thinking about him. It’s so silly.”

Jorden had shaken his head. “Not silly if you feel something real with him, Vi. Not silly at all.” He’d rested his hands on her shoulders. “What is silly is how many times Luna called me handsome last night. That bird is such a flirt.”

Violet had chuckled. “She really is. She’s probably smarter than the girls you normally flirt with.”

“Hey, now...” Jorden had wagged a finger at her but then stopped. “You know, you’re probably right.” He’d shouldered his gym bag and given her a wave.
